It’s Never Too Late to Start: Jonah’s First Season
For sixth grader Jonah Simmons, this spring is all about trying something new.
After years of playing football and basketball in Oak Park, Jonah is stepping onto the baseball field for the very first time.
And honestly—that’s what makes this moment so special for his parents, Joe and China.
Because trying something new, especially a little later than others, takes courage. But that’s also where real growth happens.
That’s exactly what drew their family to Oak Park Youth Baseball & Softball.
OPYBS isn’t just for kids who have been playing since tee-ball. It’s a space where everyone is welcome—whether this is your first season or you’ve been playing for years.
For Jonah, this season is about learning the game, building new skills, and stepping outside of his comfort zone.
But just as important, it’s about being part of something bigger.
Meeting new teammates. Learning from coaches. Gaining confidence.
And realizing that it’s never too late to start.
Zeke
Zeke’s First Season: More Than Just Baseball
For nine-year-old Zeke Howell, this spring marks a special moment—his very first baseball season.
Like many kids his age, Zeke has spent the past few years trying different things, figuring out what he enjoys, and growing along the way. But for his parents, Jerremy and Katie, this feels like a meaningful next step.
As Jerremy shared, baseball is one of those classic sports—but what really stood out was the opportunity for Zeke to be in community with others. To learn teamwork, build relationships, and develop skills that go beyond the game itself.
Because for the Howell family, this season isn’t just about learning how to hit or throw.
It’s about growth—on and off the field.
It’s about coordination, yes—but also collaboration. Confidence. Learning how to show up for others and for yourself.
Katie spoke to that shift that happens as kids get older. When they move from trying a little bit of everything to stepping into something with more intention.
This feels like one of those moments.
A chance to learn what it really means to be part of a team. To build character. To develop values that can stay with you for life.
And that’s what makes Oak Park Youth Baseball & Softball so impactful. It’s not just a league—it’s a space where kids come together, build friendships, and grow in ways that extend far beyond the field.
For Zeke, this is just the beginning.
But for his family, it’s already about something bigger.
It’s about belonging.
